Ocean City yellowfin tuna charters
Yellowfin is a highlight Sportfishing enthusiasts and professional anglers know it for the pandemonium and commotion they can cause, when the bait hits, and the crew can feel a Yellowfin catch coming on.
Yellowfin travel in massive feeding schools, and it’s not uncommon for baits on a trolling spread of 6 or more to hit all at the same time. And then the action is on, with all hands on deck, and every hand manning a rod and reel. Yellowfin, although smaller than other Tuna species, averaging between 30 and 50 pounds (with some rare reel ins weighing up to 200 pounds), realize their strength lies in numbers. Once taking the bait, Yellowfin will fight the reel in deep, bulldogging packs. Fighting an entire pack of Yellowfin is something akin to being pulled to the depths by a cinder block with a jet engine.
Many other species will bite on a Yellowfin sportfishing set-up, but it’s not uncommon for anglers on our Sportfishing charters in Ocean City, MD to get nearly overrun with a Yellowfin haul. Our experienced and knowledgeable Captain will be at the helm of On The Hunt Charters, guiding charter groups every sea-legged step along the way.
Yellowfin tuna are epipelagic fish that inhabit the mixed surface layer of the ocean above the thermocline. Sonic tracking has found that although yellowfin tuna, unlike the related bigeye tuna, mostly range in the top 100 m (330 ft) of the water column and penetrate the thermocline relatively infrequently, they are capable of diving to considerable depths. An individual tagged in the Indian Ocean with an archival tag spent 85% of its time in depths shallower than 75 m (246 ft), but was recorded as having made three dives to 578, 982, and 1,160 m (3,810 ft).
